Famous Lines

Some of the famous lines in cricket:

1. “Miya Kaptaani Karogey” - Rajsingh Dungarpur to Mohd. Azharuddin

2. “Ek aur daalega?” - Anil Kumble to Ishant Sharma before giving him one more over on Sehwag’s request in a test match against Australia. It was the fiery spell that he bowled to Ponting and took his wicket in that over

3. “Watch the next match” - A fuming Sachin Tendulkar to Ajay Jadeja when the latter teased him after Henry Olonga got him out in a match against Zimbabwe. In the next match, Tendulkar belted Olonga all over the park

4. “...tum goalkeeping accha karta hai....cricket khelega” - Dhoni’s school coach (Mr. Banerjee) to Dhoni

Hate Such Arguments

Today, I received the following message from someone on Whatsapp;

"We may not be aware of the existence of this noble and great man, Kalyanasundaram honoured by US Govt. I feel equally ashamed that India Govt has conferred 'Bharat Ratna' on Sachin Tendulkar, who seeks and gets exemption of customs duty on a 'Ferrari' which he got free, who reportedly earns crores of rupees(in hundreds) every year.

Mr.Kalayanasundaram worked as a Librarian for 30 years. Every month in his 30 year experience (service), he donated his entire salary to help the needy. He worked as a server in a hotel to meet his needs. He donated even his pension amount of about ten lakh rupees to the needy.
He is the first person in the world to spend the entire earnings for a social cause. In recognition to his service, the American government honoured him with the ‘Man of the Millennium’ award. He received a sum of Rs 30 crores as part of this award which he distributed entirely for the needy as usual.

Moved by his passion to help others, Super Star Rajinikanth adopted him as his father. He still stays as a bachelor and dedicated his entire life for serving the society.
All our Politicians, Film stars, Business magnets, cricketers Press and we all Indians should be PROUD and also should be ashamed of ourselves. American Government has honored him but we Indians even don't know that such a personality exist amongst us.

Atleast have the courtesy to pass this on and on till the whole world comes to know about this Great Good Samaritan.

Hat's off Kalayanasundaram.. We Indians are extremely proud of you and proudly say "THIS HAPPENS ONLY IN INDIA"

While there is no denying the fact that Mr. Palam Kalyanasundaram has made great (infact unbelievable) contributions, I hate when such cases are presented in 'why that and why not this' manner. Its alright to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of someone but it does not mean we should trivialize the contribution of others. Kailash Satyarthi has won Nobel Peace Prize yet he has not been conferred with Bharat Ratna. There are several others. That does not mean that the contribution of Sachin Tendulkar should be trivialized. His contribution in his field is second to none and he truly deserves Bharat Ratna.

Shocking Declaration

I have been reading Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography. Most of the details in the book are already known, which is not surprising as Sachin has been one of the most 'written and talked about' celebrity. It is the smaller incidents and anecdotes that are quite interesting.

The section that I have loved the most so far is about what he felt when Rahul Dravid declared the innings in Multan in 2004, leaving Sachin stranded at 194 not out. That was undoubtedly a surprising decision. I had not watched the press conference afterwards and I did not know that Sachin had indeed communicated his surprise and disappointment. What is interesting is the point that Sachin has made in the book about Dravid delaying a declaration in Australia when Dravid was close to a century. On top of it, Sachin was pacing his innings in Multan as he knew the team plans and when exactly the team would declare. However, Dravid decided to declare an over in advance. The coach, Sourav Ganguly, Prof. Ratnakar Shetty (Manager) later told Sachin that it was not their decision and they felt sorry for Sachin. So, it was completely Dravid's decision.

It is interesting to note that with that double hundred, Sachin would have equalled Dravid's tally of double-hundreds in Test cricket. Did that play a role? (Note: This is not in the book. It is my speculation)

I am surprised and happy that Sachin has communicated his thoughts about the incident so openly through the book.

Even Gods Make Mistakes

Managed to find an error in Sachin Tendulkar's autobiography. He has written that in the Boxing Day test match against Australia at MCG in 2003, Virender Sehwag got out on the bowling of Stuart Macgill.

This is incorrect as Sehwag was caught by Nathan Bracken at long-on off the bowling of Simon Katich.

I can never forget the innings and the dismissal. Sehwag played an innings that only he can. He got out trying to hit a six off a part-time bowler in order to reach what would have been his maiden double-hundred!!! I was amazed by the shot selection when he was knocking on the door of a milestone. Only he could have tried that. He failed to reach double century as Nathan Bracken caught the ball that was dying on him. I was heartbroken (and that is why I remember it) but Sehwag seemed unfazed. Later, at Multan against Pakistan, he tried to hit a six in order to reach a triple-century and thankfully he succeeded!!! That was the first triple century by an Indian and yet he thought of going for a six!!!

Coming back, Sachin has been factually incorrect. I am thinking of suing him for a dinner with him.

This Day, Last Year

On this day last year, I had cried my heart out. That was Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar's last day in all forms of Cricket.

Thank You Sachin for all the great memories.

Conversation between 2 Tendulkar Fans

Part of my conversation with my father a few days back;

Papa: News channels are saying that South Africa's 'Jacques' has announced his retirement from test cricket. Which Jacques this this?

Me: Jacques Kallis, who else?!!?

Papa:

Me: Why?

Papa: That means Tendulkar's record of most test centuries and runs are safe for a while!!! (I could almost 'hear' his big grin on the other end)

Me: Yup. Now, he will play only one more test. Do you want him to score a century so that he leaves on a high?

Papa: Ya......now it does not matter.....

Papa: Actually NO!! What if he changes his mind afterwards!!!

Harsha on Kambli

A very well-written piece by Harsha Bhogle on Vinod Kambli...straight from the heart....

I notice Vinod Kambli was rushed to hospital last week. It was a different Kambli from the person I knew. I found myself wishing for his health but increasingly when it became clear that he would be fine I found myself wishing for some stability in his life. I don't know if he seeks it but it has dodged him for a long time now. If there is a God, He drove a hard bargain with him; gave him the kind of talent others crave for but took away a lot of the skills you need to make the most of the talent.

Kambli didn't become the cricketer he could have been, and that's all right, very few do anyway, but increasingly in a mad search for attention, he became a caricature. He isn't alone there either. Kambli these days is an example of what fleeting fame can do. It takes away the high but leaves you lusting for it. And this search has seen him put his finger on a self-destruct button and, sad to say, keep it permanently pressed. He makes the news for the wrong reasons and there is a large part of me that wants him to turn his back on the present and re-enter a world where he has a lot of goodwill; where people remember him with a warm smile; not just for the runs he once made but for the disarming guy you had no option but to like.

The Vinod I so grew to like had an amazing story to tell. Of carrying a kit bag bigger than him, of lugging it into the compartment where the fisherwomen sat because he couldn't get space otherwise and, telling this himself with a laugh, of smelling of fish for the rest of the day! It should have been the story to beat all stories; of how an extraordinarily gifted young man fought the odds, struggled his way through, endured many many hardships to play for Bombay and then, so dramatically, for India.

The Vinod I knew could be disarming. He could play a prank on you and you would laugh with him. He could tell you a story and move you. And he could use his feet against spin better than anyone else you could see. Before his first ball in first class cricket he asked the batsman at the other end, the captain of Bombay Dilip Vengsarkar, what he should do. 'Play your natural game' he was told, as he should have been. "Okay" he said and hit the first ball back over the bowler's head for six. The captain walked up to him, his mouth wide open and he said to him "But you told me to play my natural game.."

Story of two boys

This should have been the story of two children, two boys, who would rule the world and be like two brothers. In 1993, among many odd things I did, I produced an album of cricket songs and one of them was set to the tune of "yeh dosti hum nahi todenge." and the words were "main hoon sachin aur yeh kambli..." They were such friends. I once dragged them into a recording studio and they wouldn't stop chatting. Even when one took the elevator and the other the stairs, that friendship didn't change. You just had to like Vinod.

But as success brings much happiness, it introduces you to other dangers that some are able to keep at arm's length and to which many, sadly, succumb to. Vinod starting getting trapped in an image. He wanted to live life kingsize, as the cigarette ads used to say, and I fear there was either no one to stop him hurtling down that path or he chose to disregard them. Vinod was enjoying the fruits of his success, richly deserved and something he had worked very very hard for, but I wonder, and I am not certain of this, if that became more important than his cricket. It didn't help that once the West Indies had bounced him out in 1994, he wasn't the same player. Before that series his scores in test cricket read 16, 18*, 59, 224, 227, 125, 4, 120, 5, 82, 57. Post, and during, the bouncer barrage he managed 40, 0, 0, 6, 18, 0, 27 and 28. That, in sum, was his test career.

You might think he deserved more opportunities but within a year of his last innings, Dravid, Ganguly and Laxman had arrived and there just wasn't the same consistency, even in limited overs cricket, where he had an off-on engagement till 2000. He was battling injuries too (his ankle tear in 1998 had to be the most terrible you would ever see) but even more than that he was battling himself.

He has made some poor choices, especially on television, where he has been ruthlessly exploited.

Television is nobody's friend, it seeks the headline, elevates the person producing it and consigns him as soon as he is no longer needed. Each time, I suspect, Kambli thought there was a future beckoning. But in the kind of programmes he was enticed into, there is no future. There cannot be any in the peddling of morbidity. This was not about Vinod, the lovable clown, this was about Kambli projected as a has-been trying to cling on to a friendship that others were seeking to benefit from. He couldn't see that.

He didn't have the skill or maybe he didn't want to see it. Everybody who played cricket with Vinod has a lovely story to tell about him. I don't know if they have reached out to him or whether Kambli today has been engulfed by demons that they believe are beyond redemption.

But I hope there is another twist to his story, another sunrise.

If Kambli is willing to keep the foes within him away, he will discover that Vinod has a lot of goodwill left.

Another Camera Whore

Now a PIL has been filed to challenge the Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar. I really do not understand why some people go to this extent to get some publicity and camera time. And I firmly believe that PILs should be filed in matters that are potentially harmful to the interest of the public, government, judicial system, religious beliefs, morale etc. This matter does not fall into any such category. What the advocate is challenging through the PIL is that a sportsperson does not come under the purview of such honor and are not eligible. Whether necessary amendments were made in the law or not, what is the 'harm' of conferring Bharat Ratna to a sportsperson. If nothing, it will only boost the morale of players (across discipline) in India and may motivate youngsters to take up and do well in sports. I hope the court out-rightly dismisses the PIL.

If you dont think that Sachin Tendulkar deserves the Bharat Ratna then #aapchutiyehain

Cut the crap

Amidst all the crap from certain people, I do agree that Major Dhyanchand equally deserves the Bharat Ratna. I have said that whenever I have expressed that Sachin deserves the honor. The two were on top of their sports and were a class apart.

Other names, I believe, are not quite there. Bindra did win us an Olympic Gold but that we cannot say that he is much better than Gagan Narang. Vishwanathan Anand did win a lot of tournaments and was the world champion for several years. He does present a strong case but his case is still not as strong as that of Sachin and Major Dhyanchand. He did not have to deal with the expectations of a billion people. And he was not under constant scrutiny of the media.

And yes, the government did tweak the system to give Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar but that is the kind of respect he commands and deserves. I strongly believe that the government has finally done something right.

So, I do not agree with the nonsensical crap being shared by few people. If you want to gain some visibility by criticizing Sachin, it just shows your class. I am glad that such people are not many.....at least in my friend list.

The last section looks extremely funny.....I dont think ToI intended it in a funny way but that is a question a lot of people must be asking

'Former' India Cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar becomes the first sportsman to be bestowed with the country's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna
Two of the biggest regrets in my life are (a) not buying that INR 25,000 ticket for 02 Apr 2011 and (b) not buying the ~65K Mumbai flight ticket for this weekend — feeling ashamed.
What an emotional speech. Thank You Sachin for everything......And, thank you Wankhade for showing so much love and support. Today, I forgive you for what you did 2,799 days back

GOD's Last Speech: On the day of his retirement

"Friends please settle down, I'll get more emotional! It's hard to believe my wonderful journey is coming to an end. I've a list of names to thank. The first is my father, who passed away in 1999. Without his guidance I wouldn't be standing in front of you. he said 'chase your dreams, don't give up, the path will be difficult.' I miss him today. My mom, I don't know how she managed a naughty child like me. She just prayed and prayed from the day I started playing the game. For four years I stayed with my uncle and aunt when in school, they treated me like their own son. My eldest brother Nitin doesn't like to talk ,much but he said, whatever you do, I know you will give 100%. My first cricket bat was presented to me by my sister Savita. She still continues to fast while I bat. Ajit my brother - We have lived this dream together, he sacrificed his career for me, he took me to Achrekar sir first. Even last night he called me to discuss my dismissal. Even when I'm not playing we will still be discussing technique. If that hadn't happened, I would have been a lesser cricketer.

"The most beautiful thing happened to me when I met Anjali in 1990. I know that being a doctor there was a big career in front of her. But she decides that I should continue playing and she took care of the children. Thanks for bearing with me for all the nonsense I've said (Anjali wipes tears). Then the two precious diamonds of my life Sara and Arjun. I've missed out on several birthdays, holidays. I know for 14-16 years I've not spent enough time with you. But I promise you I will spend the next 16.

"My inlaws - I've discussed several things with them. The most important thing they did was allow me to marry Anjali. In the last 24 years my friends have made terrific contributions. They have been with me while I was stressed. They have been with me even at 3am when I was injured. Thanks for being there for me.

"My career started when I was 11. I was extremely delighted to see Achrekar sir in the stands. I used to ride on his scooter and play two matches a day. Sir took me along to make sure I played. On a lighter note, Sir never said 'well played' because he didn't want me to be complacent. You can push your luck now, Sir, since I'm not playing cricker anymore.

"I started my career here in Mumbai. I remember landing from NZ at 4am and playing a Ranji game the next day. The BCCI was fantastic from my debut. Thanks to the selectors. You were right with me making sure my treatment was taken care of.
"Thanks to all the senior cricketers who have played with me. We see on the screen Rahul, VVS, Sourav, Anil who is not here. All the coaches. I know when MS presented the 200th Test cap, I had a message to the team - I said we are all so proud to be representing the nation. I hope to continue to serve the nation with dignity. I have full faith that you will serve the country in the right spirit.

I will be failing in my duty if I didn't thank the doctors who have kept me fit. Given the injuries I have suffered. They have treated me in odd hours.

My dear friend the late Mark Mascarenhas. I miss him. My current management team WSG, for continuing what Mark has done. Someone who has worked closely with me for 14 years is my friend Vinay Nayudu.

"The media has backed me a lot, since my school days. Even today. Thank you. Thanks to the photographers for capturing those moments.

"I know my speech has become long. I want to thank people who have flown in from different parts of the world. I want to thank my fans from the bottom of my heart. "Sachin, Sachin" will reverberate in my years till I stop breathing."
बड़े सुकून से रुखसत तो कर दिया उनको,
फिर उसके बाद, मोहब्बत ने बस इंतेहां कर दी

That straight drive off Sammy reminded me of some of the most memorable and joyous moments of last 24 years of my life. It was a privilege watching and idolizing you Sachin. I do not care whether you score a century tomorrow or not (though that would indeed be icing on a very large cake). Just have a good time in the middle. Lets all of us enjoy....till it lasts. And as Jim Carrey said to Meryl Streep, God bless you as you have blessed us and as he has blessed us through you #YehDilMaangeMore

The end is near...... sun raha hai na tu...ro raha hun main.....

Sunday, November 10, 2013

Before the start of the first test match, West Indies skipper Darren Sammy said that they are here to spoil Sachin Tendulkar's party.

And he succeeded in doing so. Snatched away an entire innings from Sachin!!
